One of the many tastes of summer from my childhood is this wonderful combination of frozen banana and chocolate. Frozen Chocolate Bananas are super simple to make, and the whole family will love them.

Why this recipe works
Frozen chocolate bananas are a simple and healthy-ish frozen dessert made by dipping bananas in melted chocolate and freezing them until set. The banana becomes creamy and ice-cream-like while the chocolate forms a crisp shell, making them a quick and refreshing summer snack or healthier dessert option.
They take only minutes to prepare — the freezer does the rest of the work.
Whether you’re making them for kids, parties, or a quick sweet treat on a hot day, they’re endlessly customisable and always disappear fast.
Pure nostalgia
My mum started making these delicious summer treats after we visited the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour. Yes, if you didn't visit a "big" something on a holiday in Australia during the 80s you really were missing out.
Today, the Big Banana also includes a theme park with rides and more. But I reckon the kids of today are missing out because the Big Banana cafe menu includes lots of banana-themed items – but no Frozen Chocolate Bananas!

Ingredient notes
To make up this recipe you'll need:
- bananas
- milk chocolate
- 100s &1000s or chopped nuts to decorate (optional).
Use medium-sized ripe (but not too ripe) bananas. Choose bananas that are full, plump and a bright yellow-colour, flecked with a little brown.
Also, use good quality chocolate for best results.

Equipment notes
It's also useful to have ice cream moulds (stick part only) or paddle pop sticks to poke into the bananas (and avoid sticky chocolate fingers).
How to make Frozen Chocolate Bananas
Peel the bananas and cut into two halves (across rather than lengthways).
Put the stick part of the ice block moulds (or paddle pop sticks) into the flat part of the banana where you've made the cut.
Break the chocolate into pieces and place into a microwaveable bowl. Melt chocolate using 20 seconds bursts and stirring between each burst until completely melted.
Dip the banana halves into chocolate (or spoon melted chocolate over the banana).
Place the chocolate coated bananas on a baking tray lined with baking paper and place into the freezer for at least 8 hours to freeze.
Recipe variations
You can dip some bananas completely in the chocolate and dip others only half in the chocolate to mix things up.
Sprinkle with 100s & 1000s or chopped nuts, if desired. Or, you swap milk chocolate for dark chocolate.
Serving and storage
Enjoy this banana treat straight from the freezer. The bananas should last at least a week in an airtight container in the freezer.

No, you should dip the bananas before freezing. Freezing first can make dipping difficult and may cause the chocolate to crack or slide off.
This usually happens when the chocolate layer is too thick or the bananas are extremely cold when dipped. Let the chocolate cool slightly before dipping and aim for a thin, even coating. Adding a small amount of coconut oil to the melted chocolate can also help create a smoother finish.
