Savoury Slice Recipe (Easy Australian Lunchbox Favourite)

This tasty little Savoury Slice is a retro classic that's perfect for a quick dinner, a special lunchbox treat, or a "bring a plate occasion". Chuck all the ingredients in a bowl, pour it all into a slice tin, slide it into the oven... and that's it!

Ingredient notes

To make this slice, you'll need:

  • Arnott's Jatz Crackers (also known as Savoy - or substitute any salty cracker biscuit)
  • Cheese - I use cheddar (Norco elbo style is my favourite)
  • Milk
  • Carrot
  • Ham (or substitute bacon)
  • Eggs
  • Parsley
  • Salt & Pepper.

How to make Savoury Slice

Start by preheating your oven to 180 degrees celsius / 355 degrees fahrenheit (fan-forced). Grease a slice tin (27 x 17cm) well and line base with baking paper, allowing the baking paper to overhang each side. This will help in removing the slice once it's set.

Crush the Jatz into small pieces with your hands (see image 1). Grate the carrot, grate the cheese, chop the ham, chop the parsley and whisk the eggs. Place all ingredients into a mixing bowl (see image 2) and stir to combine.

Pour the mixture into the prepared slice tin and spread evenly (see image 3). Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown on top (see image 4).

Steps involved in making savoury slice.

Once cooked, remove the slice from the oven and allow to cool to warm or room temperature. Remove the slice from tin using overhanging baking paper and then cut into squares.

Serving and storage

Store your Jatz Savoury Slice slice in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Serve warm or cold.

You can freeze the slice for up to 2 months. Wrap the slice in plastic wrap well before freezing and allow to thaw out in the fridge overnight when you're ready to enjoy.

Equipment

  • slice tin (27 x 17cm approx)

Ingredients
  

  • 3 eggs, whisked lightly
  • 1 cup milk
  • 100 grams Jatz Crackers, crushed into small pieces (about 25 crackers)
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese (125 grams)
  • 1 carrot, peeled and grated
  • 100 grams ham, diced
  • 2 sprigs parsley, chopped finely
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius / 355 degrees fahrenheit (fan-forced).
  • Grease slice tin (27 x 17cm) well and line base with baking paper, allowing the baking paper to overhang each side (to assist with removal once it's ready to slice).
  • Mix all ingredients together well.
  • Pour mixture into slice tin and spread evenly.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  • Remove slice from oven and allow to cool to warm or room temperature. Remove slice from tin using overhanging baking paper and then cut into squares.
  • Store slice in fridge and serve warm or cold.

Notes

Storing: Store the slice in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. You can enjoy it cold or re-heat to warm.
Freezing: You can freeze the slice for up to 2 months. Wrap the slice in plastic wrap well before freezing and allow to thaw out in the fridge overnight when you're ready to enjoy.

    I made this and the mixture was so runny. 1 cup of milk seemed excessive. I added flour as I wasn't sure it would cook properly. Did anyone else have this issue?

      Hi Clare - the uncooked mixture did seem a little runny to me but the milk is absorbed by the jatz during the cooking process and you also have the egg and cheese to bind the ingredients.

        Hi Joe. A Jatz Cracker is a small, round, salty biscuit that we would, for example, eat with cheese. Do you have Ritz crackers or Savoy?
