It's the quick, easy and healthy snack with a cute name. Ants on a Log is thought to have originated in the US in the 1950s – but I remember it from 1980s Australia and still make it today.

You really haven't lived until you've crunched your way through a few Ants on a Log! It's an endlessly adaptable snack that is appetising, fun and definitely the best way to eat celery.
Ingredients
You'll need just 3 ingredients:
- celery (fresh and crunchy is best – keep it fresh in the fridge by wrapping in aluminium foil)
- cream cheese (or peanut butter)
- sultanas (or currents for tiny "ants" or dried cranberries for "fire ants).

How to make Ants on a Log
In short, you just chop up the celery sticks (see image 1), fill the hollow with cream cheese (see image 2) and level it off (see image 3) and then push some sultanas into the cream cheese (see image 4). Done!

Ants on a Log Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 celery sticks
- 80 grams cream cheese (or peanut butter)
- 24 sultanas (or currants)
Instructions
- Wash celery sticks and pat dry with paper towel. Cut off bottom and leaves at top. Remove tough outer strings using a sharp knife. Cut each stick into three equal pieces.
- Scoop cream cheese into hollow part of stem and then even out across the top using the flat back of a butter knife.
- Place 4 sultanas into the cream cheese on each piece.
